AI Brief, October 30: Mistral Large 4 weights, ChatGPT API credits, Deepgram buys Daily

Mistral ships open weights for its 1T-parameter Large 4, OpenAI adds API credits for paid ChatGPT plans, and Deepgram acquires Pipecat maker Daily.

Open weights led the day: Mistral released the weights for Mistral Large 4, its trillion-parameter multimodal model, with a strong push toward coding agents and defensive cybersecurity. Elsewhere, OpenAI matched Anthropic's API credit perk for paid subscribers, IBM shipped a patch-style model update, Google put file editing inside Gemini chats, and Deepgram bought the company behind Pipecat.

Mistral releases open weights for Mistral Large 4, its 1T-parameter model

Mistral published the weights for Mistral Large 4 ("Le Chonk"), a multimodal Mixture-of-Experts model with roughly 1T total and 49B active parameters and a 1M token context window, after three more weeks of reinforcement learning on top of the public preview. Mistral says it scores 19.7% on Cognition's private FrontierCode 2.0, 48% on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index (tied with GLM-5.3 while using 47% fewer tokens per task), 41% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, and 51% on the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index, with three selectable reasoning modes. Weights are on Hugging Face for deployment with vLLM or SGLang under the Mistral Ecosystem Open-Weight license, a modified MIT license that requires a separate commercial license for model-as-a-service offerings.

Why it matters: Teams that need a frontier-class model on their own infrastructure, particularly for security work that hosted APIs often refuse, can now download and run one instead of waiting for preview access.

OpenAI gives paid ChatGPT plans matching monthly API credits

Simon Willison notes that OpenAI has launched API credits for eligible ChatGPT subscriptions, where subscribers on its higher-tier plans receive an equivalent quantity of credits to apply to one of their API organizations. He writes that it is close to identical to the benefit Anthropic announced earlier this month for Max and Team subscriptions, which granted expiring credits for use with the Anthropic API. Willison, who subscribes to both, says the credits may lead him to ship public-facing demos.

Why it matters: If your team already pays for the higher ChatGPT tiers, a chunk of API spend is now covered by the subscription, which lowers the cost of prototypes and public demos.

IBM ships Granite Switch 4.1.1 as a backwards-compatible patch release

IBM released Granite Switch 4.1.1, a patch update to the modular Switch architecture it shipped just over a week ago, and says it is fully backwards compatible with 4.1 with no migration required. The release updates the Granite Speech ASR model, covering multilingual speech-to-text across 10 languages with native punctuation and capitalization, and updates the Decision adapter in granitelib-core with better performance on the Jev Decision Index test set. IBM says nothing was recomputed apart from the new ASR model and adapter: the base model is untouched, so you compose the adapters you want and deploy. The company says tutorials and an Adapter SDK for third-party adapters are in progress.

Why it matters: Composing adapters over an unchanged base model means model upgrades can look like dependency bumps rather than redeployments and revalidation of a whole new checkpoint.

Gemini can now generate and edit Docs, Sheets, slides and code in chat

The Verge reports that Gemini users can now generate, preview and edit PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code directly in Gemini. The capability is available starting today for all Gemini users, with PDF preview and editing on web and mobile and the other formats on web only for now. Google says documents can be expanded to full-screen editing and that users can highlight text to ask questions or request changes, such as highlighting a table and asking Gemini to turn it into a graph. The Verge notes Anthropic launched a comparable document and presentation feature in Claude earlier this year.

Why it matters: Document generation and revision now happen in one place, which removes a round trip for workflows that previously exported a file and reopened it in Workspace.

Deepgram acquires Daily, maker of the open source Pipecat framework

TechCrunch reports that Deepgram is acquiring Daily, which builds and maintains Pipecat, an open source framework that orchestrates voice and video streams alongside speech-to-text, LLM and text-to-speech components while reducing latency. The deal amount was not disclosed, and both companies said Pipecat will stay open source. Daily co-founder Kwindla Kramer told TechCrunch he favored Deepgram CEO Scott Stephenson's commitment to keeping Pipecat open source and vendor-neutral, and Stephenson said the goal is an open ecosystem where developers use the best models for their use case. Deepgram is also launching Real-Time Context Standard, an open protocol for voice agents co-developed with the Pipecat team that defines audio context metadata, instructions for how a model should use those signals, and guidance on response style.

Why it matters: Pipecat sits in the middle of many voice agent stacks, so its ownership and the new context protocol affect how portable your pipeline stays across STT, LLM and TTS vendors.
